Design vs clients

The advertising industry is a service industry and a designer is hired to provide the creativity that others lack, for a fee. We need to remember that we are offering our creativity for the client’s use to serve that client and express the clients ideas and concepts in a way that they would if they could. It is not about the designer, it is about the client and their need to communicate a message to their target audience. (by charene.net)

Hmmm…. Nice one charene !!! Believe me: It is not easy to find the balance between artistic freedom and advertising. The often-troubled relationship between accounts and designers proofs this.

So the client holds the universal truth because he pays the bills? Or does the agency has to guide the client (otherwise why does he need an agency)? Think about this!

This is advertising

Isn’t advertising all about making things sell better? Ofcourse not, just kidding… I saw movie before. The music by Portishead convinced me posting this movie.

Modernista.com

Published by Lev Detrez under ads

I was watching the live stream of the lecture by Nenad Romic (aka Marcell Mars) for the Experimental Media Course in Communication & MultimediaDesign. He was talking about Modernista.com and I would like to talk about it too.

Visit Modernista.com (an advertising agency from Boston) and you’ll see a wikipedia page as homepage, with a little menu on the top left. When you browse trhrough the portfolio, you’ll will be redirected to social networks and content platforms.

ATTENTION; open a new browser window and type in ‘modernista.com’ otherwise it won’t work! (*)

Examples of other pages on modernista:

  • Click on ‘print’ and you will see all work on a Flickr-page
  • Select ‘Video’ and you’ll see a YouTube page
  • Click on ‘Web’ and you’ll end up on Delicious

Now when you link to modernista.com like this, it will just add a small layer over your current site. So you can keep browser your latest website while you’re already on modernista. Wicked! The layer says: The menu on the left is our homepage. Everything behind it is beyond our control.

I guess regular clients or brands are not ready for websites like this, but people like you and me can see the beauty of it (or better; the idea behind it).

A 3555 km trip with Harley Davidson

Published by Lev Detrez under ads, video

Nice campagn to match your profile with a type of Harley Davidson. My type was a ‘Road King Classic’ (98% match). Not really what I expected, because I don’t like the word ‘classic’…

Anyway, if I had 21495 € too much, I might consider it. Nice campaign though.

One remark; they ask me to fill in a form for a testdrive, but doesn’t ask me for my driving licence…
